Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania is located in the Cradle Mountain / Lake St. Clair National region of Tasmania, Australia. It is a popular tourism destination and offers an astounding range of flora and fauna and wonderful eco-based destinations such as Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Cradle Mountain boasts a variety of fine bushwalks, varying in difficulty from simple to rigorous. A good beginners walk circles Dove Lake (foreground of below pictures) and takes approximately 1½ hours (prepared paths, mostly flat). For the more experienced, the Overland Track to Lake St. Clair is one of Australia's best-known bushwalks, and covers 85 km (53 mi).

Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain epitomise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech provide a range of environments to explore.

Icy streams cascading out of rugged mountains, stands of ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes and a wealth of wildlife ensure there is always something to captivate you. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. A visit will reveal why.

Cradle Mountain

This highland park contains one of Tasmanian's most recognised symbols or icons. That of the beautifully shaped Cradle Mountain rising above the waters of Dove Lake.

This park is famous for its superb mountain peaks and lakes, its atmospheric forests and its wild alpine moorlands. In the North at Cradle Valley, there's an award-winning visitor centre. Likewise at the southern end on the shores of Lake St Clair there is a new visitor centre.

The two ends of the park are joined by the famous 80km Overland Track which is a 5-7 day trip for bushwalkers. Both ends of the park have camping and cabin accommodation and a range of day walks.
